There were about 1,3 million incidences of housebreaking affecting 5,8% of households in South Africa. The most likely victims of housebreaking were male-headed households, households in metros, Indian/Asian households followed by white households, very low and very high-income households, and households in Northern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Approximately 48% of affected households reported incidences to the police.

This is according to the Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey (GPSJS) 2018/19 released by Stats SA. Data on victims of crime was previously collected through the Victims of Crime Survey (VOCS); this survey was redesigned into the GPSJS to make provision for new information on required on governance. Thus far, two reports from GPSJS have been published – one on governance themes and the other on victims of crime.

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) wishes to thank communities in Buffalo City, Ekurhuleni, Mangaung, The Msunduzi, Polokwane, Witbank, Kimberly, Rustenburg, and Cape Town, that participated in the Census 2021 Mini-test.

Subsequent to the Census 2021 Mini –Test, the Post-enumeration Survey (PES) Mini-test is currently underway in selected provinces until 13 December 2019. The purpose of this survey is to evaluate the quality of the Census 2021 Mini-test.The PES 2021 Mini-test is conducted independently of the Census 2021 Mini-test. PES field workers will visit dwellings in selected areas to administer the PES questionnaire. Households may be re-visited from 20 January to 14 February 2020 to obtain missing or additional information that will ensure that people are correctly identified between the PES 2021 Mini-test and the Census 2021 Mini-test.

The report shows that between 2002 and 2017, there were improvements regarding school-going learners aged 6–18 years. School attendance rose from 91,3% to 96,0% and problems around access to text books as reported by households dropped from 24,3% to 5,9%. The increase in school attendance was boosted by the implementation of the ‘no-fee’ policy. The percentage of learners benefiting from the ‘no-fee’ policy rose from 0,3% to 64,8% by 2017. Learners attending public schools in Limpopo, Free State and Eastern Cape were the major beneficiaries of the ‘no-fee’ policy.

Access to health care is a great concern in South Africa. A large percentage of the population depends on the public health system to provide for its health care needs. According to the report, there were very low levels of access to medical aid across all population groups, more especially among black Africans. Those residing in Limpopo, Gauteng and Western Cape were the leading provinces in terms of access to medical aid. Black African- and coloured-headed households mainly used public healthcare facilities, whereas Indian/Asian - and white-headed households used private facilities.
